4 Things You Must Know About Black-Billed Magpies

Visual Charm and Nesting Habits

Black-billed Magpies bring considerable life to western North American scenery—not only with their striking looks, but also through their large, bushel-basket-like nests built in trees. In the past, farmers and ranchers attempted to wipe out this species, yet their efforts proved fruitless. Today, the birds are widespread in open rural areas and even inhabit towns across the mountainous western regions.

Migration and Residence Patterns

The majority of Black-billed Magpies are year-round residents. Some populations move to higher elevations in autumn, while a small number shift southward or to lower slopes when winter arrives. Individual birds rarely stray far east of their breeding territories.

Physical Identification

Measuring 17.5 to 22 inches (44 to 56 centimeters) in length, these magpies are easily recognizable in most regions. Their wings and long tails have a glossy green and blue sheen, and large white patches on their wings stand out prominently during flight. In California, they may be confused with the Yellow-billed Magpie, so careful observation of bill color is key.

Preferred Habitats

Black-billed Magpies thrive in a range of semi-open environments in the West, including rangelands, coniferous stands, stream banks, forest edges, and farmlands. They avoid dense, unbroken forests, as well as treeless grasslands and extreme desert conditions. They are most abundant in tree groves along streams in open areas, agricultural lands, and some suburban neighborhoods.

Five Unique Insights Into the Horned Lark

The Horned Lark is a distinctive small songbird that, while somewhat rare in the Estes Valley, can be frequently observed in the high-altitude tundra of Rocky Mountain National Park during the summer. This species is extensively distributed across the United States. In Colorado, these birds favor expansive, open environments such as sagebrush valleys on the high plains, prairie lands, and open agricultural fields along the Front Range. Beyond their preference for wide-open spaces, several fascinating characteristics set this avian species apart from other songbirds.

Chopped Bagels: The Viral Breakfast Trend Taking the Internet by Storm

Chopped Bagels: The Viral Breakfast Trend Taking the Internet by Storm

Americans have a long-standing, passionate relationship with bagels—one that often sparks lively debates and cultural moments. Who can forget the great bagel emoji controversy, or Cynthia Nixon’s infamous order: a cinnamon-raisin bagel piled high with cream cheese, lox, red onion, capers, and tomatoes, which some media outlets dubbed a “crime against humanity” and “the strangest bagel of all time”? Even Ina Garten, the beloved culinary icon, faced mild backlash earlier this month for her unorthodox bagel-slicing technique. It’s clear that bagels aren’t just a breakfast food—they’re a cultural touchstone, and the latest viral iteration, chopped bagels, has only amplified this obsession. While the trend has its detractors (some argue it sacrifices “sandwich integrity” for virality), its overwhelming popularity on TikTok—where thousands of creative recipes and tutorials have gone viral—and the skyrocketing traffic to Allrecipes’ own riffs (like the 2.8 million-view California BLT Chopped Bagel on Instagram) prove that chopped bagels are more than a passing fad. They’re a clever, convenient twist on a classic, resonating with home cooks who crave balance, flavor, and that perfect bite in every mouthful.

DNA Data Storage: A Sustainable Frontier for Digital Information

DNA Data Storage: A Sustainable Frontier for Digital Information

Throughout human history, the methods used to preserve information have evolved from primitive cave paintings to sophisticated silicon-based electronics. Today, genetic material is emerging as a revolutionary medium for digital archiving due to its extraordinary physical properties. Compared to traditional hardware, DNA is over a thousand times more compact than the densest solid-state drives and significantly more durable than high-end magnetic tapes. Furthermore, the biological structure of DNA, which uses a four-letter nucleotide sequence, provides a natural coding environment that can effectively mirror the binary language used by modern computers.
