How To Paint A Pond In Watercolor

Watercolor painting is a truly magical medium—water itself becomes part of the creative process, producing soft blends and beautiful surprises on the page. Today, we will go through a step-by-step guide on how to paint a pond in watercolor, accompanied by a video tutorial you can follow along with at your own pace.

If you enjoy experimenting with paint, you may also love the watercolor salt technique, which adds natural-looking texture and organic effects. For this pond painting, I’m using watercolor markers again. These markers contain water-based ink that flows and spreads beautifully when activated with water, creating light, airy results. Traditional watercolor pans or cakes can also achieve a similar effect.

Materials You Will Need for Watercolor Painting

Watercolor sketchbook (thick, heavy paper that handles wet media well)

Watercolor markers or watercolor cakes

Water brush or standard paintbrush

Masking tape for watercolor

Before starting, choose a reference image for inspiration. Claude Monet’s Water Lilies is a perfect example of a dreamy pond scene and a wonderful guide for color and composition ideas.

Step-by-Step: How to Paint a Watercolor Pond

Start by taping the edges of your sketchbook page with masking tape. This helps create clean borders and prevents paint from spreading onto other pages underneath.

Begin applying watercolor marker directly onto the paper. Use a mix of blues and greens to build richness, depth, and variation in the water.

Next, use a water brush to gently activate and spread the pigment. As the water interacts with the marker ink, it will naturally bloom and flow, creating a soft watercolor effect. Blend lightly—avoid overmixing so the colors remain varied rather than turning into a single tone.

Continue adding more marker color to another section of the page. For areas where you want lily pads or flowers, you can leave white space untouched or reserve it using masking fluid.

Blend again with the water brush to soften transitions between colors.

Add additional marker layers while the paper is dry. This is important—applying marker on wet areas will reduce the watercolor effect and make it behave more like flat marker ink. Use these dry applications to guide movement and flow in the pond water.

To create a sense of motion, blend using circular brush movements. You can also use vertical strokes to suggest ripples and shifting water surfaces. Introduce soft touches of pink, orange, and yellow to represent water lilies and floral highlights.

With a fine water brush, paint the lily details. These can be simple abstract shapes or more refined floral forms depending on your style.

Finally, I added a touch of white gesso to brighten certain flower areas. While not a traditional watercolor method, this mixed-media step creates beautiful contrast and highlights, giving the piece extra dimension and charm.
