The Top 10 Tropical Islands You Should Consider
When you think of paradise, you likely imagine white-sand beaches, crystal-blue water, and palm trees stretching into the horizon. That’s the vibe of a great tropical island — those places where time seems to slow and the stresses of the world fade away. After spending years travelling and exploring many such islands, this list compiles Matt’s favourite and best tropical islands across budgets, travel-styles and interests.

1. Seychelles

Located over 1,200 miles off the coast of Kenya, this archipelago of 115 islands offers some of the most pristine beaches and secluded getaways in the world. It features coral reefs, nature reserves, and a breathtaking environment. Visits can be costly, but worth it for the experience. Best for: pure relaxation & tropical beauty Tip: Visit during the cool season (May-September) when rainfall is lower.

2. Maldives

This chain of around 1,000 coral-atoll islands in the Indian Ocean is famed for luxury resorts, over-water bungalows, incredible snorkeling and diving. It’s one of the top escape destinations in the world. Best for: luxury tropical indulgence & underwater experiences Tip: Dry season (November-May) is ideal. Monsoon months (June-October) see more rain/humidity.

3. Ko Lipe (Thailand)

A smaller, more off-the-beaten-path tropical island in southern Thailand. It has clear warm waters, good seafood, laid-back accommodation and less development than the biggest resorts. Best for: budget-friendly tropical stay with beach & snorkeling Tip: Visit November-March for optimal weather; the monsoon season (May-October) may limit access.

4. Bali & the Gili Islands (Indonesia)

Bali remains one of the most popular tropical islands worldwide — great surfing, fantastic food, vibrant culture, temples and volcanoes. The nearby Gili Islands add to the mix if you want one more layer of island adventure. Best for: tropical island with culture + activity + nightlife Tip: Weather is pretty constant; April-October tends to be drier.

5. Fiji

In the South Pacific, Fiji is composed of hundreds of islands—many uninhabited or lightly inhabited. It offers diving, sailing, snorkeling and island-hopping for ultimate tropical escape. Best for: honeymooners, adventurers, tropical sail/snorkel Tip: Cyclone season is November-January; year-round warm though.

6. Tahiti (French Polynesia)

Tahiti brings the iconic over-water bungalows, azure lagoons and romantic island vibe. A classic tropic-paradise destination. Best for: luxury tropical getaways, honeymooners Tip: May-October tends to be cooler and less humid.

7. Big Island (Hawaiʻi) (USA)

Hawaiʻi’s largest island is a mix of tropical beaches, lush valleys, volcanoes and waterfalls. It offers more than just beach lounging. Best for: tropical + nature + adventure Tip: Weather varies widely across the island; check region-specific forecasts.

8. Cook Islands (South Pacific)

Less visited than some of the big names, the Cook Islands offer a quieter, more authentic tropical-island experience across 15 islands scattered over a huge Pacific area. Best for: off-the-grid tropical serenity Tip: Hot and humid year-round; planning required for transport and logistics.

9. Curaçao (Caribbean)

A Dutch-influenced Caribbean island, offering vibrant architecture, beaches, stable weather (outside of hurricane belt) and strong social/party aspects. Best for: tropical beach + culture + nightlife in the Caribbean Tip: Because it lies below the hurricane belt, it’s somewhat more weather-stable.

10. Perhentian Islands (Malaysia)

Located on the east coast of Malaysia, these two islands (Kecil & Besar) are ideal for beach lounging, snorkeling, turtles and coral — a tropical paradise with fewer crowds. Best for: budget-friendly tropical island with underwater life Tip: Monsoon season limits access outside March-October.

Additional Noteworthy Mentions

Matt’s list goes further, also including islands like Bermuda, Azores, Saint Lucia, The Whitsunday Islands (Australia), and Galápagos Islands for their particular tropical appeal. (Nomadic Matt's Travel Site)

Why This List Matters

The islands are chosen not just for beach aesthetics, but for variety: whether you’re seeking luxury, budget travel, snorkeling, adventure or pure relaxation.
The list gives you a range of destinations across the globe, so you can pick based on budget, travel time, weather, and interest.
Each island comes with “best for” tags and timing advice (when to go, when to avoid monsoon/hurricane seasons).

What to Consider When Choosing a Tropical Island

Budget & Accommodation: Some islands cater to luxury (Maldives, Tahiti), others to budget (Ko Lipe, Perhentian Islands).
Weather & Seasons: Tropical doesn’t always mean “sunny always”. Monsoons, cyclones, or rainy seasons can affect certain islands.
Activities & Style: Do you want relaxing beaches, snorkeling/diving, nightlife, nature/hiking? Choose accordingly.
Accessibility & Infrastructure: Some islands are remote, transportation is limited, or development is minimal — a pro or con depending on you.
Crowds vs. Isolation: Popular islands might be more crowded and expensive; lesser-known destinations might offer more peace but less infrastructure.
