Let’s Paint an Autumn Maple Leaf!

It seems like many people are currently exploring how to paint autumn trees and leaves, and I completely understand why! Autumn is an incredibly inspiring season, full of vibrant colors and endless possibilities for painting. Honestly, I think autumn offers more beauty than any other season. The hues are so rich and varied, making it a perfect time to grab your paints and get creative.
To help those who are new to watercolor painting, I’m going to walk you through a simple, step-by-step process to create a beautiful autumn leaf. Don’t worry—you’ve got this! Give it a try…

Step 1

I’m using cold-press watercolor paper for this project. First, I sketched the leaf larger than its actual size using a #2 pencil. I taped the real leaf next to my sketch because it was a bit curled, and I couldn’t see the full top surface clearly.

Step 2

Wet the entire surface of the leaf. Allow the paper to dry to the point where it’s no longer shiny, and then start painting the veins with Winsor Yellow. Remember, when working with watercolors, you should always start with the lightest colors and layer darker ones on top.

Step 3

While the paper is still wet, take Permanent Rose and paint the area around the veins. Now, you might be wondering why I’m using a pinkish color like Permanent Rose for a red maple leaf. The reason is that the pink adds brightness and life to the red. Without it, the red would appear dull and flat.

Step 4

While the Permanent Rose is still wet, apply Alizarin Crimson to the outer edge of the leaf. Let the colors mix and blend—that’s part of the fun! Use a sharp stick or tool to gently scrape out the veins to create texture.

Step 5

Once everything is dry, take Winsor Yellow and a rigger brush to paint the veins again. Then, mix Alizarin Crimson and Burnt Sienna together, and fill in the areas between the veins and around the leaf’s edges. You’re almost finished!

Step 6

Now, create a mix of Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, and Ultramarine Blue. Use this blend to paint the outermost edge of the leaf and some of the veins. A small rigger brush works perfectly for this step.

Step 7 (Final Step)

To finish, I decided to add a little definition with a black micron pen. I didn’t outline every single vein, just a few select ones. Then, take some Cobalt Blue and paint a shadow beneath the leaf to make it look like it’s resting on a surface rather than floating. For the stem, use a mix of Permanent Rose and Green Gold at the very tip.
And there you have it—your very own autumn maple leaf painting! Enjoy the process and have fun exploring all the colors of the season.

The Asian small-clawed otter holds the title of the world’s most diminutive otter species and stands out as one of the most gregarious. These small, nimble mammals are celebrated for their intense familial connections and energetic temperaments. However, even with their high level of resilience, they are currently battling significant survival challenges. Issues such as the destruction of forests, the loss of natural territories, and a decrease in available prey have led the International Union for Conservation of Nature to categorize them as a Vulnerable species on their Red List.
