Leifeng Pagoda: A Timeless Landmark by West Lake

Standing on the south bank of West Lake in Hangzhou, Leifeng Pagoda has become one of China’s most evocative and beloved towers.

A Rich History

The original pagoda was commissioned in 977 AD by King Qian Hongchu of the Wuyue Kingdom to honour the birth of his son. Over time the timber-and-brick structure weathered invasion, decay and theft, eventually collapsing in 1924.

A Modern Reconstruction

In recognition of its cultural importance and scenic value — especially the famous “Leifeng Sunset” view — a new tower was built on the original site and opened in 2002. The current tower stands about 71 meters tall and blends traditional design with modern engineering for a panoramic experience.
