Top 5 of the Most expensive VW Beetles

When the unassuming Volkswagen Beetle first made its way to Canada, it debuted with an accessible price tag: less than 1,600 US dollars for a brand-new model. Today, the iconic “Bug” has shattered auction records, with a Beetle customized to resemble the famous movie car Herbie selling for a staggering USD 212,500. That’s what you call an extraordinary return on investment.
Naturally, Hollywood stardom has a way of driving classic car prices far beyond reasonable expectations. Steve McQueen’s Bullitt Mustang, stripped of its connection to one of the most legendary car chases in film history, would be just another vintage pony car. Instead, it stands as the most valuable Mustang ever sold.
While a Beetle lacks the thundering V8 power of a Mustang, this compact “Bug” is arguably an even more profound cultural icon. They were ubiquitous in the 1960s and 1970s, and taking a classic Beetle for a spin still draws crowds—dozens of people will approach you to share their own Beetle stories.
Thanks to this widespread familiarity, the Beetle transcended its status as a mere automobile. It became an unlikely movie star, a work of art, and certain rare models have grown shockingly valuable among collectors. Initially, the VW Beetle captivated audiences because of its ordinariness, blending seamlessly into everyday life. Below are five exceptional Beetles that have long since left their economy car origins in the dust.

1. 1961 VW Type 1 Coupe “Herbie” — USD$212,500

As mentioned earlier, this is the new reigning champion of Beetles: a genuine movie prop from the 1980 film Herbie Goes Bananas. Previously on display at Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood casino, its value stems largely from its status as a Hollywood artifact rather than just a car.
Keen-eyed VW enthusiasts have pointed out that this vehicle features a somewhat clumsy restoration, with numerous non-era-correct details. However, more extreme modifications—including a rear-mounted gearshift—indicate it was one of the cars used for scenes where Herbie “drove himself,” operated by a hidden driver in the backseat.
Herbie-themed Beetles dominate the list of priciest Bugs, with the most valuable examples hailing from the original 1960s film franchise. Cars from the 2005 reboot Herbie: Fully Loaded were expensive to produce and still command significant attention from pop culture collectors. In 2018, one such model sold at Mecum Auctions in Monterey for over $100,000.

2. 1960 VW Type 1 Coupe (Ex-Jerry Seinfeld) — USD$121,000

Celebrity ownership also boosted the value of this well-preserved 1960 coupe, which had only 15,000 miles on the odometer when it sold at the 2016 Amelia Island auctions. The sale price raised eyebrows in the market, but its former owner—comedian Jerry Seinfeld—propelled it to an eye-watering $121,000. Paying six figures for a low-mileage Volkswagen? It just goes to show the power of celebrity provenance.

3. 1950 VW Type 1 Coupe “Split Window” — USD$175,000

Beyond celebrity-linked models, the most valuable collector-grade Beetles are the earliest iterations. VW officially launched in Canada in 1952, but a small number of cars were imported to the U.S. prior to that. A Dutch importer sold just two Beetles in 1949, but those are little more than historical footnotes.
The true blue-chip Beetle for affluent classic car collectors is one of the 160 models brought to the U.S. by New York-based importer Max Hoffman in 1950 (he also imported 320 units in 1951, which similarly fetch top dollar). While Hoffman wasn’t a household name, he was a towering figure in the booming European import car market. He earns partial credit for popularizing icons like the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, the Porsche Speedster, and the elegant BMW 507 convertible (owned by Elvis Presley, among others).
Before finding success with these high-end models, Hoffman recognized the potential in Germany’s quirky “people’s car” and sold several hundred of them. Today, concours-quality examples of his 1950 Beetles are valued at nearly $175,000—assuming you can even find one for sale. Compared to later Beetles, these early models are delicately simple, defined by their distinctive two-piece rear window (the “split window” moniker).

4. 1953 VW Beetle “Sphere” — USD$127,782

If a Max Hoffman-imported Beetle represents the pinnacle of industrial design, this next entry shows what happens when a renowned artist reimagines the iconic Bug. Indonesian artist Ichwan Noor is famous for his large-scale sculptures, and his international acclaim stems in part from his “Beetle Spheres” series.
The Beetle’s design already features rounded, circular elements—but Noor took it a step further, transforming the car into a literal sphere. His creations are crafted from cast aluminum and polyester, warped interpretations of a 1953 Beetle that are surprisingly visually striking. They look like Volkswagens trapped in a space-time distortion.
The record price for one of Noor’s Beetle Spheres was set at a 2018 Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong, where a yellow model sold for $127,782.

5. 2001 VW New Beetle RSi — USD$80,000

Stepping away from classic air-cooled Beetles, we have the most expensive Beetle ever sold new. Exclusive to overseas markets (but now importable to Canada under grey-market laws), the New Beetle RSi is a widebody, carbon-fiber-clad, VR6-powered tribute to Volkswagen’s heritage.
The standard New Beetle was essentially a Beetle-inspired body placed on a Volkswagen Golf chassis—a playful, nostalgic car that resonated with buyers. The RSi, however, was designed to be a showstopping homage to the car that built Volkswagen’s reputation, unveiled at a time when the company was competing with Toyota to become the world’s largest automaker.
Powered by a then-new 3.2L VR6 engine producing 220 horsepower, the New Beetle RSi delivers an impressive exhaust note and surprising cornering grip. Only 250 units were produced, each with a sticker price exceeding $80,000—adjusted for inflation, that’s enough to buy a Porsche 911 today, not just a base model. Volkswagen reportedly lost money on every RSi sold, but these rare performance Beetles are now more affordable for collectors who can track one down.
