24 Best Surf Towns in the World: A Regional Guide
Whether you’re chasing perfect wave conditions or simply looking for a cool town with a surf-vibe, this guide highlights what the author considers some of the very best surf towns around the globe—organized by region and suited to surfers of various levels.

Europe

Peniche, Portugal

This Portuguese town is described as a top surf town for all kinds of wave-seekers. With about 10 miles of shoreline containing everything from beginner-friendly beach breaks in Baleal to heavy barreling waves at Supertubos, Peniche serves both novices and experienced surfers. It’s also conveniently located about 90 minutes from Lisbon, making it an accessible destination.

Ericeira, Portugal

A former fishing town turned Europe’s first official World Surfing Reserve, Ericeira offers a mix of laid-back culture and serious wave options. The south side offers easier waves, while north of town you’ll find reef breaks like Ribeira d’Ilhas and Coxos, which are world-class. It’s ideal for those who want both a vibrant surf community and nightlife.

Aljezur, Portugal

If you prefer fewer crowds and a more tranquil setting, Aljezur on Portugal’s west coast is recommended. The town is small and scenic, perched above the Costa Vicentina, with options for beginners (Arrifana) and more advanced surfers (Amado, Bordeira) depending on season and swell.

Mimizan, France

A classic Atlantic surf-town in France known for its long sandy coastline and good beach breaks. Winter brings bigger waves and more challenging conditions; from May onward the surf is more accessible for learning and improving. Great for surf camps and a relaxed vibe.

Hossegor, France

Often called the surf capital of France, Hossegor is known for hard-hitting beach breaks like La Gravière and La Nord, which attract advanced surfers hunting barrels. But there are easier peaks nearby too, making it accessible for intermediate levels. Add in boutique shops, good food, and lively nightlife and it’s a full surf-town experience.

Zarautz, Spain

Located in Spain’s Basque Country, Zarautz offers a strong mix of beach breaks and an urban setting. Especially attractive for intermediate surfers who want to step up their skill while enjoying town amenities and local culture.

Sopelana, Spain

Just outside Bilbao, Sopelana is accessible yet slightly off the beaten path. Good for the tail end of the NW swell season (April/May and autumn) with punchy beach breaks. The town is pretty and offers affordable accommodation and surf lodges.

El Cotillo, Canary

Islands (Spain) On Fuerteventura’s northwest coast, this fishing town turned surf hub offers a chill atmosphere and solid swell reception from the North Atlantic. A mix of sandy beach breaks and heavier reefs make it versatile for different levels.

Newquay, England

Often called the surf capital of the UK, Newquay offers everything from mellow breaks to big-winter surf. Fistral Beach is the main spot, with other easier beaches for beginners. The town is surf-industry ready: surf schools, gear shops, and a lively coastal town vibe.

Asia

Kuta Lombok, Indonesia

A quieter alternative to Bali; the similar name offers some continuity. Though the town itself has limited waves, the surrounding coast within minutes offers a variety of breaks—from mellow inside reefs to heavier barrels. Ideal for those willing to explore.

Canggu, Bali, Indonesia

Canggu is a mixed bag—on one hand, it's highly developed, busy, and can feel crowded/polluted. On the other hand, it has excellent surf infrastructure and, importantly, easier waves for beginners compared to southern Bali. A great beginner-friendly option if you can tolerate crowds.

Midigama, Sri Lanka

Chosen as a strong base on Sri Lanka’s reef-rich south coast. Midigama offers a variety of breaks within easy reach—from relaxed beginners’ waves to hollower reefs for more advanced surfers. The town itself is relaxed and set by great beaches.

Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka

Famous for right-hand point breaks like Main Point, Peanut Farm, Pottuvil Point and more—all within reach. Affordable and surf-rich, and arrives into peak season when the south side of Sri Lanka gets consistent swells.

Siargao, Philippines

More than just a town: this island is a surf destination. Known for Cloud 9 (a heavy barreling right-hander), plus other breaks suitable for intermediate surfers. From General Luna town you have surf, scooters, island-hopping, beach bars—all in tropical setting.

Chigasaki, Japan

A laid-back Japanese coastal town with a deep surf culture, located about an hour south of Tokyo. The waves are more mellow and ideal for longboards or funboards. A great option for those combining surf and culture.

Africa

Taghazout, Morocco

A former fishing village turned surf hub on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, north of Agadir. The crown jewel is Anchor Point—a long peeling right-hand point break. Best time: October–March when winter swells roll and wind dies down. The town has surf camps, rooftop cafés, yoga retreats.

Muizenberg, South Africa

Just 30 minutes from Cape Town, this bay offers gentle rolling waves ideal for learners and longboarders. The local “Surfer’s Corner” is vibrant with surf schools and rental shops. More experienced surfers can venture nearby along the coast. The best time is winter (June–August) for consistency.

Oceania

Raglan, New Zealand

Home to some of the longest left-handers in the world—Indicator is the standout break. The town is small but packed with surf culture (cafés, craft breweries). Great for intermediates and advanced surfers.

Byron Bay, Australia

A quintessential Australian surf town: cool, inclusive, and with excellent waves. “The Pass” is a legendary long right point. Busy though. The town also boasts healthy food markets, organic culture, and a laid-back beach lifestyle.

Americas

Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

On the Nicoya Peninsula, this black-sand coast offers consistent waves year-round. The wet season (May-August) tends to bring stronger swells; the dry season (October–March) is more beginner-friendly. From lodges right by the palms to walk-to-waves access.

El Tunco, El Salvador

A part of the famous “Surf City” near San Salvador. Known for powerful right-hand point breaks (La Bocana, Sunzal), and a lively nightlife to match the waves. Best from April to October when south swells dominate.
San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua Though the town itself may not have the break, it serves as the gateway to a cluster of high-quality beaches (Playa Maderas, Playa Remanso) within short drive or boat ride. Offers variety: from forgiving beginner waves to hollow beach breaks. Best March-October.

Tofino, Canada

Located at the tip of Vancouver Island, this wild and rugged surf town offers cold-water surfing, long empty beaches, forest surroundings and quality waves at breaks like Cox Bay, Chesterman, Long Beach. A blend of nature and surf culture.

Encinitas, USA (California)

Just north of San Diego, this surf town combines laid-back SoCal vibes with a strong surf scene. Famous breaks like Swami’s (right-hand point) cater to more advanced surfers, and beach breaks like Moonlight and Beacons cater to mixed levels. The town offers surf culture, live music, board shops etc. The main caveat: localism and crowding.

Why These Surf Towns?

According to the author, the selection criteria include:
Wave variety and quality: Options for beginners, intermediates, and advanced surfers.
Town / Surf-culture fit: The character of the town matters—the streets, the cafés, the community.
Accessibility & infrastructure: Towns that are relatively easy to reach, with surf schools, accommodations, and amenities.
Regional coverage: Surf towns from Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas to provide a global spread.
He also notes that Europe features heavily because it offers many small, enjoyable surf towns with a strong local vibe and the author has travelled more there.

How to Use the List

If you’re beginner/intermediate, look for towns in this list that mention “softer beach breaks” or “good for beginners”.
If you’re advanced, look for “barrels”, “point breaks”, and “heavy beach breaks” in the descriptions.
Also pay attention to seasonality: Many places have prime surf seasons (e.g., Taghazout Oct-Mar, Santa Teresa wet vs dry season, etc.).
Consider town character: if you prefer quieter towns vs party-surf hubs, the descriptions help you decide.
