10 of the Rarest Orchids on Earth
Did you know the orchid family (Orchidaceae) comprises around 25,000 different species? Many of these species are critically endangered and are rarely seen in their natural environments. In fact, the rarest orchids are often protected by law and thrive in fragile ecosystems.
Want to learn more about these rare orchids? Keep reading to discover the ten rarest members of the Orchidaceae family.

1. Western Underground Orchid

This orchid is so rare that scientists believe fewer than 50 of them exist worldwide. Found only in the broom bush scrubland of Western Australia, it spends its entire life underground. It flowers between late May and early June—still, underground! The orchid blooms with over a hundred reddish and cream-colored flowers and emits a strong fragrance. Since it cannot photosynthesize, it doesn’t contain chlorophyll. Instead, it parasitizes the roots of the broom honey myrtle bush through a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungus. Pollination is carried out by termites and gnats, drawn by the flower's scent.

2. Western Prairie Fringed Orchid

This orchid is native to just five states in the American Midwest, with only 172 known populations remaining. Four of these populations contain over 1,000 plants. The Western Prairie Fringed Orchid thrives in wetlands known as “prairie potholes,” but it faces major threats from fires, overgrazing, and urban development.

3. Ghost Orchid

Found in Florida, Cuba, and the Bahamas, the Ghost Orchid grows on the main branches of living trees, particularly pond-apple trees. It blooms from June to August, with one to ten fragrant flowers opening one at a time. The white flowers are distinctive, with long lateral tendrils on the lower petal. Endangered in the wild, the Ghost Orchid is notoriously difficult to cultivate in captivity, with very few successful attempts.

4. Rothschild’s Orchid

Known as the Gold of Kinabalu Orchid, Rothschild’s Orchid is a striking flower with green and red striped petals. It was first discovered in the rainforests of Mount Kinabalu in Northern Borneo. This orchid blooms with up to six vibrant, tiger-striped flowers and can only be found at elevations between 1,640 and 4,000 feet.

5. Shenzhen Nongke Orchid

Unlike other orchids, the Shenzhen Nongke Orchid was created in a laboratory by agricultural scientists in China. Named after Shenzhen Nongke University, where it was developed, it took eight years to produce the first bloom. The orchid takes four to five years to produce each flower, making it incredibly rare. One flower can sell for over $220,000.

6. Hawaii Bog Orchid

Found only in bogs in Hawaii, the Hawaii Bog Orchid lives in areas protected from wild pigs by fences. It features greenish-yellow flowers on erect spikes and pale green, egg-shaped leaves. The plant’s exact reproductive habits and lifespan remain a mystery. It faces threats from pigs, cattle grazing, hurricanes, and invasive plants. Fewer than 50 plants remain, as of 2009.

7. Coleman’s Coral Root

With only three known populations in the Sky Islands of Arizona, Coleman’s Coral Root spends much of its life underground, relying on a symbiotic relationship with fungi. The plant doesn’t perform photosynthesis but instead draws nutrients from the roots of shrubs and trees. When the flowers do emerge, fewer than 200 grow above ground at any given time. Disturbances such as accidental trampling or mining activity threaten the plant's survival.

8. Dragon’s Mouth

Found in bogs, swamps, and wetlands across Eastern North America, Dragon’s Mouth is a leafless orchid that blooms with a single bright pink flower in the spring. The flower has a pale pink lip with yellow centers and magenta spots. While the species is not globally endangered, it remains threatened in North America due to habitat loss and reliance on inexperienced bees for pollination.

9. Hochstetter’s Butterfly Orchid

This rare butterfly orchid was rediscovered in 2013 on the Azorean island of São Jorge in the North Atlantic Ocean. Believed to inhabit only a single mountaintop forest, its populations have dwindled due to deforestation, agriculture, and the spread of non-native flowers.

10. Sky-Blue Sun Orchid

Critically endangered, the Sky-Blue Sun Orchid is found in Tasmania, South Australia, and Victoria, with an area of occupation smaller than 0.01 km². Populations are limited, and in 2000, fewer than 60 plants were known to exist. Habitat loss is the primary threat to the species, with only small colonies remaining.

Ichigo Daifuku (いちご大福), also known as strawberry mochi, is a beloved seasonal dessert that captures the essence of spring in Japan. This iconic wagashi (traditional Japanese sweet) stands out among classic daifuku varieties for its innovative use of whole strawberries as the centerpiece, wrapped in a thin layer of sweet red bean paste (anko) and encased in soft, chewy white mochi.
