Origins of the Volkswagen Beetle — The “People’s Car” Vision

The design responsibility fell to Ferdinand Porsche, founder of Porsche. A year earlier, Adolf Hitler had set clear requirements: the car should carry two adults and three children and reach speeds slightly above 100 km/h.

The Beetle was unveiled in 1938 at a price comparable to motorcycles of the era. However, production plans were interrupted by World War II, delaying its widespread availability.

First Generation (1945–2003)

The true beginning of the Beetle came after World War II, when British authorities took control of Volkswagen’s factory in Wolfsburg. Production resumed, focusing on creating an affordable and reliable vehicle for everyday use.

Known as the Type 1, the first-generation Beetle featured a unique rounded body, a rear-engine layout, rear-wheel drive, and an air-cooled engine. These characteristics made it economical, practical, and easy to maintain.

Second Generation (1997–2010)

After decades of success, the Beetle returned in a modernized form in 1997. This version blended retro-inspired styling with contemporary engineering.

While it retained the iconic curved silhouette, the new Beetle was larger and more refined. It was built on the platform of the Volkswagen Golf and switched to a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout.

Engine options included various inline-four units between 1.4 and 2.0 liters, along with more powerful choices like the VR5 and VR6 engines. This generation aimed to capture nostalgia while appealing to modern drivers.

Third Generation (2011–2019)

The third iteration, introduced in 2011, further refined the formula. It balanced retro design cues with a more modern and sporty appearance, featuring a longer, flatter roofline.

Like its predecessor, it used a front-engine, front-wheel-drive configuration. Inside, the cabin received updated technology and improved ergonomics, offering a more comfortable and contemporary driving experience.

Engine options expanded to include a range of inline-four units from 1.2 to 2.0 liters, along with a 2.5-liter inline-five. Diesel variants were also available, providing better fuel efficiency.
