Tiny brown bird, compact / “round” shape; short, narrow tail often held cocked (upright).

Delicate, pointed (finely tapered) bill.

Upper parts are dark brown with subtle barring on wings; underparts paler.

Pale “eyebrow” stripe (supercilium) visible in good light.

Size & Life History

Length ≈ 10 cm, wingspan about 15 cm.

Very lightweight – around 10 grams.

Average lifespan is about 2 years in the wild.

Distribution & Population

Widespread throughout the UK, found in gardens, woodlands, farmland, coastal areas, moorland and towns.

UK’s most common breeding bird; recent estimates show ~ 11 million pairs.

Behavior & Song

Despite small size, has a remarkably loud voice. Song is a high-pitched series of whistles ending with a trill; calls include a sharp “tic-tic-tic.”

Wrens are active and restless: flit through undergrowth, shrubs, rock crevices, leaf litter, wherever they can find insects.

Nesting & Reproduction

Males build several candidate nests (for display) in sheltered spots (trees, walls, banks, shrubs). Female chooses one, then lines it with softer materials (feathers, moss).

Typical clutch size is 5–8 eggs.

Habitat & Seasonal Occurrence

Found all year round in the UK. Although populations decline somewhat in very cold winters.

More scarce in upland areas (northern England, parts of Scotland) compared to lowland gardens and woodlands.
