Arriving at Matsushima-Kaigan station along Japan's Pacific coastline, visitors discover a charming port area featuring cruise ticket offices, narrow pathways leading to historic Zuigan-ji Temple, and traditional wooden tea houses. Before you stretches the iconic bay with its 250 small islands dotting a tranquil, often mist-shrouded inland sea. The 40-minute bay cruise doesn't cover great distances but continuously reveals new wonders: uniquely shaped atolls, perforated rock formations, and solitary pine-clad islands. Four surrounding hills provide varying perspectives of this seascape masterpiece.

Ago Bay (Shima) - The Oyster Cultivation Waters

In Mie Prefecture, Ago Bay carves the coastline into a sequence of sheltered coves, forested promontories, and serene river channels. Serving as the centerpiece of Ise-Shima National Park, this area has remained largely untouched by mass tourism. Seawater extends kilometers inland, creating a protected interior sea perfect for pearl cultivation and shellfish farming. The bay's surface is marked by numerous rectangular floating platforms supporting oyster cultivation. Within these fishing grounds, visitors may encounter ama – traditional female free-divers who harvest abalone and oysters using only masks and nets. The Yokoyama observation point offers panoramic views of the harbor, scattered islets, meandering waterways, and the distant Pacific horizon.

Toyama Bay - Where Snowy Peaks Meet the Sea

Along Honshū's northern coast facing the Sea of Japan, Toyama Bay presents a dramatic winter contrast: the 3,000-meter peaks of the Tateyama range rise just kilometers from the shoreline. From the harbor, the view frames calm coastal waters against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains. This remarkable proximity between alpine heights and ocean creates a landscape unique in Japan, often compared to Norwegian fjords. Each spring, storm systems drive massive schools of bioluminescent firefly squid (hotaru-ika) shoreward, their electric blue glow visible in the bay's waters. Pre-dawn boat tours from Namerikawa offer the best viewing of this natural phenomenon.

Shibushi Bay (Kyūshū) - Mangroves and Volcanic Shores

At Kyūshū's southern extremity, Shibushi Bay forms a wide crescent embraced by subtropical woodlands. Access involves traversing a national route that winds through Ōsumi Peninsula mountains before opening to a coastal plain blanketed with tea plantations and rice fields. While Shibushi port serves as a ferry terminal for Osaka routes, tourism remains refreshingly undeveloped. The area is renowned for its mangrove-lined estuary and distinctive volcanic sand beaches. At Tsurumine's shoreline, protected dunes provide nesting grounds for sea turtles, with volunteers monitoring egg-laying sites each spring. During low tide, ancient stone dikes marking historical salt pans and oyster beds emerge from the receding waters.

Kabira Bay (Ishigaki) - A Coral Sanctuary

On Ishigaki Island's northwestern coast within the Yaeyama archipelago, Kabira Bay presents one of Japan's most exceptional tropical panoramas. The bay features brilliant white sands, transparent waters revealing vibrant coral gardens, and small islands resembling lotus blossoms floating on an emerald mirror. The approach road winds through sugarcane fields and giant hibiscus plants. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve within Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, the area enjoys protected status that prohibits swimming to preserve the fragile ecosystem. Glass-bottom boats provide alternative means to admire the coral formations without disturbing marine life.
