How to Put Together Stylish Yet Comfortable Airport Outfits
From sun-soaked summers in San Sebastián to winter ski getaways in Big Sky, travel has always been one of my favorite subjects to talk about. I truly enjoy hearing how my packing advice or travel wardrobe suggestions help you plan trips or discover outfits that work perfectly on the road. Today, I want to dive into a closely related topic that I’m honestly surprised I haven’t covered before: comfortable airport outfits.
Whether I’m getting ready for a long international flight or a short domestic hop, my goal is always the same—finding the sweet spot between ease and style. With all the usual travel hassles like delays, schedule changes, and hauling luggage, the last thing I want is clothing that feels restrictive or uncomfortable. At the same time, I still want to look polished. Below, I’m sharing my favorite outfit formulas and practical tips for dressing on travel days.

What to Wear When Flying

When choosing an outfit for a flight, it’s important to think about everything you’ll likely be doing before, during, and after the journey. You’ll be sitting for long periods in limited space, navigating tight airplane aisles and restrooms, walking long distances through terminals, napping in your seat, or even sprinting through the airport at times. All of this makes comfort a top priority when planning airport outfits.
That said, comfort doesn’t require giving up personal style. In fact, looking well put together while flying has been rumored to increase your chances of an upgrade. Chic and cozy are not mutually exclusive, and it’s absolutely possible to achieve both at once.

Tips for Building Comfortable Airport Outfits

Before sharing specific outfit ideas, I want to highlight a few travel-day styling principles I’ve picked up over the years. Keeping these tips in mind makes it much easier to create outfits that feel relaxed yet refined.
Prioritize layers. Airplanes are often chilly, but I’ve also experienced flights where extra layers were very welcome and easy to remove. On top of that, the weather at your destination may be very different from where you’re departing. Layered outfits help you adapt quickly and comfortably.
Choose supportive shoes. This one is essential. Even the coziest clothing won’t matter if your feet hurt. I usually reach for a good pair of sneakers when I travel. For shorter trips, I sometimes opt for my Stubbs & Wootton shoes. Since I have high arches, adding supportive insoles has completely changed the game for me. I get mine from Fit2Run, and they make almost any sneaker comfortable enough for all-day wear.
Invest in well-made loungewear. Coordinated sets, joggers, and pullovers are perfect for airport outfits. While there are plenty of affordable options available, frequent travelers—especially those taking long flights—benefit from investing in higher-quality lounge pieces. Brands like Vuori, Varley, and Rhone offer items that mix and match easily, work just as well at home as they do while traveling, and feel incredibly soft.

3 Comfortable Airport Outfit Ideas

Now for the fun part. Below are three stylish and comfortable airport outfit ideas that work beautifully for travel days. Most of these pieces are items I already own and love, while the rest are firmly on my wish list.
Chances are, you already have similar basics in your closet. You can recreate these outfit formulas using what you own and fill in any gaps with a few thoughtful additions. I hope these ideas help simplify your packing and check one more thing off your travel to-do list.

Jogger Matching Set

The comeback of the tracksuit is one I fully support. Today, it’s easier than ever to find lounge sets that look stylish rather than sloppy. Monochrome outfits, especially matching sets, instantly appear polished and timeless.
One of my favorites is Rhone’s Dreamglow jogger paired with the half-zip top. The fabric is incredibly soft, and the set looks effortlessly chic. It comes in several beautiful color options, and honestly, I’d be happy owning more than one. I love styling the blush pink version with my Hoff sneakers, a brand I discovered in Spain last year and quickly fell in love with. I always add my insoles for extra support. If I can only pack one pair of sneakers, these are the ones I choose.

Button-Down Shirt with Pull-On Pants

When flying, I gravitate toward pants with stretch for maximum comfort. The navy Rylie pants from J.McLaughlin are a frequent choice for travel days because they offer gentle compression while still looking polished.
For the top, I usually start with a classic white T-shirt or tank and layer a button-down shirt over it. Linen button-downs are my go-to option since they’re breathable and versatile. Finish the look with comfortable flats and minimal jewelry for an elevated yet relaxed airport outfit.

Sweater Paired with Joggers

A good pair of joggers can be styled in countless comfortable airport outfits. While matching them with a sweatshirt is always an option, pairing joggers with a more refined sweater instantly upgrades the look.
If you look closely, you’ll see me wearing this exact combination. I love how the belt bag and sneakers add pops of green that bring the outfit to life. These Adidas sneakers are among my most-worn shoes, whether I’m running errands or traveling. I styled them with ruffled socks from Amazon, which I wear constantly. That said, for longer flights, I always switch to bamboo compression socks for added comfort and circulation.
